I have a '96 Johnson 150 2 stroke. Engine fires right up and runs perfect, but if I kill it and sit awhile, it does not want to run again. Sometimes it will fire right back up but will die as soon as it is put in gear, others it doesn't want to start at all. Funny thing is, once I can get it to take, it will run perfectly full throttle, back to idle etc.. until I kill it again. The carbs and ignition system were all replaced by the previous owner right before I bought it.

There are others here that have more experience working on them and I'm sure they will give there input but I had friends with similar instances with their VRO rudes. It's been a while but I think there is a check valve in the oiling system that goes bad and brings those results. Remove the oil cap and test it. Pretty sure that was how you diagnosed it. I'm assuming that it smokes like hell when you get it running?

It does smoke for a minute when it starts, but the oil system has been deleted. Just run mixed gas now.
