What rpm are we talking about here, crash?

Sounds to me more like an engine trouble than a wrong prop, but not knowing the rpm makes anything a wild guess.

I would get a tach and see what kind of RPM's your turning. I have a 55hp Johnson with the stock OMC 11 3/4 X 17 prop on my 16' Lund (rated for a 75hp) and I run 30mph with 2 people in the boat but really have issues planing with 4 people in the boat where it takes 12-13mph to get on top of the water. It takes a good 15 second to get up on top of the water where I'm limited to only 10-11mph with 4 people until I finally get on top of the water and cruise at 25mph with 4 people. I don't have a tach either but I do have one on the way along with a new Hustler Hub, 11 3/4x17, and 12x15 wheels to try on my boat since I dinged up the stock OMC prop last week :(

Your 55hp should be running 5500rpm for peak power.
