I have an older 80s or so 50hp johnson with a jet pump. Worked last year but went to start it and the fly wheel wont turn. The starter engages just fine but it just wont turn over. Any idea what could make it stick like that?

No it wont move by hand either. Just spoke with sort of a boat guy who said to pull the spark plugs and try it again. If it doesnt crank over it may have a bad power head. Does this sound logical? I'll try it now anyway

pull the plugs and apply some oil to the cylinders, let it sit for a few hours then try to turn the flywheel by hand again.

Hi,
You might want to make sure it's in neutral (turn the prop by hand and make sure it's actually in neutral), put some penetrating oil in the spark plug holes and then put an impact gun on the flywheel bolt. Set it to a lighter setting and let it work.
Good luck,
Dave

Remove plugs.
Tilt motor all the way over, plug holes high.
pour PB BLast(or spray) into plug holes.
Let sit over night.
Work flywheel back and forth
Turn motor over several times
Install plugs and test in water.

If it is in gear and the lower is stuck you will have the same cannot turn issue. Make sure it is in neutral.

didn't think about tilting the motor back to let the oil work , and the neutral suggestion may sound stupid but i know i have overlooked it before.
