Won’t start in neutral?

Hey guys, 84 Evinrude 9.9. I can't get this motor to start in neutral.,I have to shift it in fwd so I can advance the throttle a little more than the neutral safety position. But after it’s started I can shift it back to neutral and it’s good and it idles down low. Could this be an adjustment of the lean/rich knob? Maybe not getting enough fuel to start? Thx

Yes the choke is working.. I didn’t try to choke it though while doing the neutral start. I didn’t need to choke it when I advanced the throttle. I honestly thought the choke is for cold starts?

Look up ‘link sync’. Your motor has a neutral safety block..cannot start at high throttle position in neutral. You can adjust so it will achieve a medium/high idle in neutral, and that will solve your issue.
Good luck!

Thx kbait. Yeah I noticed the safety block. Where would I search link sync? Seems like everything is working great except this issue. Thx

If it idles low and slow (however you get it there), the air/fuel mix appears to be correct. In addition to the idle air/fuel mix (the needle), there is also a throttle idle stop. On the ’84, the throttle stop is the wheel on the throttle side of the engine down at the pan. They are often broken by a prior owner, but try it — simply sets the throttle at a lower/higher idle speed. It sounds like yours needs to be adjusted. The best approach is probably to adjust it to its slowest position, then just use the twist grip to throttle up to high idle (in neutral) for starting. The markings on the twist grip are pretty much just for general reference. Just turn the twist grip counter clockwise as far as it will go with the gearshift in neutral (should give you a high idle setting).

The link and sync simply involves adjusting the throttle wheel to first nudge the cam on the mag plate (timing plate) at the mark on the cam. The wheel should first begin to open the carb throttle plate at that point. Bottom line — twisting the grip opens the carb at just the right timing point. You will have to remove the manual starter assembly for access.

Thx oldboat1 I have the throttle wheel touching the cam plate all the way as soon as it can. I’ll look at that knob you’re referring to. I replaced that as well, just never used it. Thx

wheel should first touch the plate at the mark. At that point, the carb throttle plate starts to open.

Maybe that's the way you have it set up (if so, link and sync would be correct).
