Re: wiring
If it is a 3 position switch as it looks like, it could be for the bilge pump, or other things that the PO had it the boat like raido, lights, running lights, or other addon items. You'll have to see where the wire goes and put it where you want to power that addon. Runnig lights here are required by law and have to work if stopped by the law or you get a ticket $75.00 here. Therefore they will need a switch. Best to check the laws covering boating there and wire the electrial ones in as needed. traikor wire works for most applications and is cheap at Walmart, or get a drop cord and it will do the job better and you don't have to buy a bunch of 10 foot rolls of wire. Mark each wire for what it powers at both ends and you'll know what it is for as you wire it an a year later. Use jumper cables made from a drop coard to test the old wire will tell wher the old wire goes as long as you are sure it dosen't go to the motor. Rewireing the motor and bypassing the plug will not hurt a thing as long as you have it insulated good where it goes thru the hole where the pulg was and you twisted and soldered thm and used the same gauge wire when doing so. I have done several older Mercs that way because the wires and plugs at the motor go bad. I have one now that I am doing that to for the same reason.
Have fun,
