Re: wiring

If it is a 3 position switch as it looks like, it could be for the bilge pump, or other things that the PO had it the boat like raido, lights, running lights, or other addon items. You'll have to see where the wire goes and put it where you want to power that addon. Runnig lights here are required by law and have to work if stopped by the law or you get a ticket $75.00 here. Therefore they will need a switch. Best to check the laws covering boating there and wire the electrial ones in as needed. traikor wire works for most applications and is cheap at Walmart, or get a drop cord and it will do the job better and you don't have to buy a bunch of 10 foot rolls of wire. Mark each wire for what it powers at both ends and you'll know what it is for as you wire it an a year later. Use jumper cables made from a drop coard to test the old wire will tell wher the old wire goes as long as you are sure it dosen't go to the motor. Rewireing the motor and bypassing the plug will not hurt a thing as long as you have it insulated good where it goes thru the hole where the pulg was and you twisted and soldered thm and used the same gauge wire when doing so. I have done several older Mercs that way because the wires and plugs at the motor go bad. I have one now that I am doing that to for the same reason.
Have fun,

Re: wiring

In order to get the correct shift and throtal cables for your setup you will need to take them lose at the motor, and mark each as to what it is, and measure them for length, and know just what control you have. A call to Iboats or other sellers of teleflex cables will get you the cables you need. Do not take the old ones lose from the control till you have the new cables so you can replace them as you take the old ones off.

Re: wiring

Yes the cables are the same, and the button in your other post is a tilt, trim switch for a motor equiped with
Oldman570 one.

Re: wiring

Joe, You have a trigger inside your distributor housing. Sounds like you need a service manual....

Re: wiring

I belive the tan wire is the tach wire for the tach but not sure as I do not know just what controler you have. The tach plug is for the voltage to the gages in the dash and the tach sensor wire and should not be cut off. If the plug for the tach dose not have an other wire from it to the dash , an you plan on wireing things right, you will need to get that plugin harness to do the job. Your other option is to butcher it as the PO had. The 110 recitipal is proble for charging the battires and or a onboard charging system, you'll have to trace out the wires and see where they go. If they go to the battery the PO probley used a seperate batt. charger and used a 110 plug on the charger to charge the battries, along with using it to 12v. power any addon accessories not always used. Over the years I've seen some of the most ungoddly wireing jobs ever done by those that never had a clue. You reaily need to get a OMC manual for your motor as it will have most everything you'll need to know about the motor and wireing.
