What are the letters next to each termnal on the switch?

You should have the following --

A = accessory (purple wire feeds +12 volts to the instruments when the key is on)
B = Battery (red wire should have +12 volts on it all the time.
C = choke/primer (active when the key is pushed in and activates the choke or primer solenoid)
M = magneto
M = Magneto (ground) Yes there are two "M"s. When you turn the key OFF these two terminals are shorted together to ground the magneto thus killing the engine.
S = Starter solenoid (energizes the starter solenoid when the key is turned to START).
