I am in way over my head and seek advice from the experts on this one. I am wiring a 1989 350 and am going by this diagram
http://www.geocities.com/gfinney77/diagram.html

if anyone can help with these questions I would appreciate it.
1. what size fuse should I be using on the key switch to the relay.

2. in wiring the starter I have a 4 post system on my starter, two big ones that run up and down, then 2 small ones on each side of the solenoid. How do I tell which one takes the direct line to my battery, and which one goes to the relay.

3. On this diagram I don't have the automatic choke and the circuit breaker that are shown next to the coil. do I just omit these wires all together?

4. My distributor cap only has one wire input, do I still need to ground it out?

Let me know if you need more detail or explination of what I am trying to do.
Thanks

Re: wiring problem

1.In order to determine the amperage, you must know the operting amperage of the relay...It don't give u that,so look on the relay case.Hopefully, it'll be there.
Then,go 5amps over for protection.

2, The solenoid is straight forward. One big lead on the solenoid goes to the starter. The other big lead gopes to the battery direct.
On the small leads, "START" at the ign switch completes the circuit. If you were to touch the two small leads of the solenoid to respective posts of the battery, it would close the solenoid to start. So one to the "START" post of the ignition switch, the other to the posative post of the battery.

3, Yes.You can eliminate them in toto,if you don't plan on installing automatic at a later time.

4, No. The distributor housing is electrical ground,so no need for a wire for such.

Man, that diagram is in poor shape, isn't it?
Owell, poor is better tham nothing i reckon.
Good luck.

Re: wiring problem

I can't read the schematic well enough to tell whether you have a slave solenoid in addition to the starter solenoid, as is on my 1980 Merc 898. If so, then the wire that connects to the "start" or "ign" terminal on your starter solenoid is energized via the slave solenoid. The slave solenoid is energized by the key switch.

Sounds like 12 Footer has it figured out, but I'm gonna look for a better copy of that schematic...

Walt

Re: wiring problem

It's a mercruiser engine that I am putting on a Volvo 270 outdrive. The schematics are for a volvo 350 engine. From what I understand they are interchangeable. I don't have a dedicated fax but if you call me first I can set it up! 615-579-5928 ask for Gerry
There is an additional slave solenoid I think. It's this blue thing with 4 prongs on it.

Re: wiring problem

I have copies made of the wiring diagram. I can mail them to you, if you will leave address my e-mail. clanton@atlantic.net I have got to find some computer nut that owns a boat and trade labor to get my scanner working.
