Wiring on three wire VRO

Hi Folks,

I've just bought a little boat with a 1986 Johnson 140 outboard and unfortunately the electrics are a bit of a mess.

I would be grateful if someone could let me know what the wires on the three wire VRO are for.

Apologies if this question has been answered already on this forum, I can't seem to get the search to return any results relevant to this subject.
