I still have not been able to find the year of my motor - now thinking it could be an 89? 60 HP 3 cylinder VRO Anyway, would someone be able to tell me which number from the control side goes to the what number on the engine side see pics below ( also not sure why I have 8 wires on the control side and 7 on the engine side.

In pic 3 I did a continuity check and the 3 pins in the pic all went to ground is that correct?

Hmmm, I dont know this exact harness, but it sounds like you have a short somewhere. Typically the ground wires all meet up and go to one prong. Ill give you an easy check! Go to the corresponding female plug and check continuity to the Ground cable for the battery. If they all have continuity, then yes they are all ground.

The female plug and corresponding wires are fried...That is why the ground looks all screwey in pic 2

Okay gotcha. Well then my friend, I believe you have melted insulation and more than likely have a series of shorts.

OK Thanks, I will check on the short... I am thinking from the control side 1 to 6, 2 to 7, 3 to 4, 4 to 1, 5 to 2, 6 to 6, 7 to 3, 8 to 5

Just going with like colors is that correct?

Should be, but no telling whats goin on there. Ya never know what previous owners do when it comes to wiring. You can tell he cut the wires and spliced them to salvage the wire harness. I think you are going to just need to get a new harness.

The wires pre spliced are factory. Here is a pic of the control. Do OMC control wire harnesses use the same colors as the motor side harness? I am going to rewire from the control box to the engine and cut the plugs out.

did you checkout the wiring diagrams at the beginning of the forums?..it may not have a diagram specific to your situation, but the first link does have a diagram of the control box and the second link has the typical color codes omc used in their wiring
