hey guys- just a quick add on-- any time any of you guys are in my neck of the woods, please call and drop in. If you ever visit Nova Scotia, Canada, I would be honored to have you come visit, and If my boat is finished, we can go for a tour of the Nothunberland Strait, off the nothern coast of Nova Scotia, not far from where I live. cal

Some claim you can, not sure it is OK for marine applications, but the far better option is to replace with a marine alternator and just remove all of the wires from the regulator (you can leave it there with the hoses on). I just installed a low mount alternator kit from breezeworks, works great.:D

eh, more work, more $$. if you can replace the regulator easily and cheaply, why not? check out this thread. i'm tempted to go the junkyard and pick up a couple, see what happens. my reg is going, so the other option is the alternator kit. the more i think about it, the more i think the reg replacement shouldn't be an issue, marine-wise. solid state, no chance of sparking, so it shouldn't be a problem with safety.

Re: wiring diagram

Oh! Then the voltage regulator should be built into the alternator, and you do not need the water cooled voltage regulator (or any other regulator) at all. A marine alternator should have screens built into the openings to keep sparks from igniting gasoline vapors in the bilge. You can pull it out and take it to an auto parts place and have it tested, and they should be able to tell if it is a marine alternator. They should also be able to help you with wiring it into the system. Does the alternator bracket look professional or or is it homemade looking? If it looks manufactured, the PO may have added a made for 470 kit to it, which would be good, very good:). Good luck!

Re: wiring diagram

hi terry- the water cooled reg. that came with the boat had so many wires running to and from it it was a total mess. There was even an ordinary house light switch wired to it, I suppose to go from stador to altenator?? The bracket is definilty home made,, I cant read any numbers on the altenator, any other ideas to tell if there is a reg on it??? cal

Re: wiring diagram

You need to start a new thread of you own for your question. No one will answer it off this thread, because they are seeing a totally different question on Wiring diagram.

LOL sounds like a real mess! From what you said, I'll bet you have a auto alternator in there, you need to get a marine alternator. Like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/100-...9130903QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear Hopefully you can get it to fit properly. If you have an alternator, everything can come off of the regulator. Wires from the stator can be taken off and taped. The alternator is pretty easy to wire in, only three wires as I recall. Sounds like you still have a job to do. Make sure you label the new wiring well:D.

Re getting back

Re getting back

hi guys- its been awhile since I was on the air, Sorry. i have a medical condition called RSDS syndrom. it simply means that Im in constant psysical pain 24-7. The last couple of weeks have been especially bad, and when it is that bad, I cant manage even to type on our laptop. Dont feel bad, its better its me than someone else. Anyway, back to life, thanks for all your advise in the past. As Ive said, I havent been able to do anything lately so my wiring problem is still a problem, and my memory, or lack of one, wont let me recall your advise, as well all my past emails have been erased, thanks to you know who?? I have managed to find a wiring diagram for my 470- 1980-1982, can I just follow that diagram and attach the wires that it calls for?? There are a bunch of wires on my engine that are not on the diagram, Im going to try and upload a pic so you can see what I mean, my daughter comes home in two days and Ill see if she will do this for me. If I follow the diagram, will I be alright.?? There are a bunch of wires that go to my shifter interupter and run along the back of the transom?? They are not on my diagram, and im not sure what to do with them. can you help me??? thanks....cal
