hi guys- this is my first time on this forum and I am only 2 years into boating, and loving every minute of it. I have a question about wiring of my 470 mercruiser engine. recently a friend and I have started to rewire my boat to get ready for next season. I have been looking every where to try and find the proper wiring diagram for my engine, but I cant find it anywhere. I have tried 470 breezeworks and I ge sent to a site to buy a manual for my engine, if thats the only way im going to get the diagram, then I guess Ill bite the bullet and order one, I am worried about getting the proper year of manual. It seems that my boat is a 1987, but by going by the gaskets I have just ordered for the head, my engine is a 1984, so Im not sure which one to order?? any ideas?? I would also like to remove the stador on my engine(just to get rid of the unneeded weight) but not sure what kind of trouble I am asking for?? any thoughts would be great, thanks guys. A special hello to martin, who has helped me a great deal over this summer via the emails back and forth!!!

Re: wiring diagram

In a pinch you can use this one for the 3.0 points ignition WITH ONE EXCEPTION. On a 470 the purple/yellow wire (provides battery voltage to coil during starting) shown coming from the starter to the coil + comes from the slave solenoid (470 uses a different type of solenoid) in place of the black one shown in the diagram. White out the black wire on the slave and the p/y wire from the starter. Redraw the p/y wire to the terminal where the black wire was on the slave and you pretty much have it. There is no oil pressure switch or buzzer. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13E4R2.PDF Good luck.

You want Mercruiser "Manual #8 Mercury Marine 4 cylinder". Which gaskets? The head gasket and valve cover gasket are the same part# for either year 84 or 87. What number is on the valve cover 165, or 488? You can look up part numbers for your engine here. Check the serial numbers. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=4

Re: wiring diagram

Check your PMs re: wiring diagram. which gaskets are we talking about? only different ones i can think of may be the exhaust manifold/riser gaskets, which are different depending on if you have an aluminum or iron manifold. as far as the stator goes...i wouldn't bother unless you're in there for something else. minimal weight, not being driven by the engine.

Re: wiring diagram

thank you for the fast reply guys, I have been told by martin fox, that this site will be my dream come true for advise and help. Well you are definitly living up to that for sure. Me and a friend are going to rewire my boat this afternoon, the previous owner had made a mess of it before I bought it, he has wires going everywhere that lead to nothing and some that lead to regular house switches that have pig tail ends that just end to nothing. The whle thing is just a mess, It should be aliot easierto follow after we are done( I hope). Thanks again guys, and happy boating...............cal

The decal on the top of the cover, an 87 would probably say 165, a 83 might be 488.

Was just curious if you really had an 87. I think the 470 decal was on older engines. You can check the engine serial number. It is on the lower starboard side of the engine, behind the fuel pump.

Re: wiring diagram

the reason I say I have an 87, is because on the dive platform on the stern , there is an id number, and the last two digits are 87, and a friend of mine tells me that is the year of the boat. Maybe this is no so, do you know for sure?? The more I look up diagrams on this site, example the exhaust manifold and risor diagrams, my risor compares with one from a 1982 style, so I am just as confused as before. PS- I cant find the serial number that you mentioned, there is no plate there, and no other numbers that I can see????cal

Re: wiring diagram

That is interesting. It does sound like you have the older style engine. Just for your information, Your outdrive SN and gear ratio is on the port side of the drive unit, and your transom SN is underneath the decal on the gimbal housing. Have fun wiring:).

Can't answer, I don't have it.
Not sure how fast your current starter is turning. Are all the connections clean and tight?

Maybe Terry will log in and can tell if there was a difference with his.

Yes a little bit faster. I did not get mine from there (got it locally), but that is the starter. part# 2-2591-DR-2 Works just fine, and is WAY easier to install, since it is only about 2/3 the size of the original, and no support bracket needed.:)
