Putting a new teleflex universal tach on my basscat. I have an 1990 evinrude xp 175hp.
I have put the gray tach wire to the SEND, the purple to the IGN, Black to IGN,and the setting is on 6P. The tach is not reading anything. What am doing wrong ?

Use a multimeter and check that you have signal in the gray lead as well as 12V and ground.

I'm sure you meant BLK to ground? When you turn the key on does the needle go to 0 ? or at least move a little bit? If not its probably either +12 or ground.

getting 12 volts at the ign post and reading 10.5 volts at the send post. The tach needle goes to O when power is introduced. What I am curious about is the wiring on the block on the engine. The teleflex instruction is showing that my gray wire (tach) should be comming out of my throttle unit.

Start by instrument end and check, then work your way back to the engine until you find there the problem is. The grey from the connector strip at the engine should go to the 3-pin contact at the rear of the remote contr.

You may be using the wrong "sense" wire (mistaking some other color for gray). Look directly below the key on the control box. There isa three pin connector there. +12 volts, sense, and ground are available there. You can make your own plug (Radio Shack has pins) or the grey wire is available under the console. You should not have 10 volts on the Sense wire. That is a pulses line when the engine is running and as such is a modified AC signal -- not a DC voltage.
