Hey everyone, quick question here. I have a 4hp Johnson that runs great. My dad got it for me at a garage sale and I got it running and seems to run great. I was curious as to what size boat I should get for this motor. I am only interested in fishing smaller mountain lakes in northern California and the surrounding area. Any recommendations on boats (sizes or brands?) for this little motor? Thanks?

Something in the 10' range. I would try and find a boat around the $100 price range. Brand doesn't matter at this point since your just trying to get on the water. 4hp isn't much so don't expect to be flying across the lake unless you plan on strapping it to the back of a canoe.

Some good brands are Gregor, Klamath, Valco, Western, but they are going to cost more.

It will move anything you want to clamp it to, short of about 20 feet. It's just a matter of how fast you want to go. And at its fastest, it will be pretty slow. Around 5mph on a jon boat.

Re: 4hp Johnson

I spent a lot of my childhood ramming around in an extrememly beat up 12' or 14' tinny with a little 4HP Evinrude. I now own a really nice '89 Evinrude 4HP deluxe. I have used it on a very stout old Alumacraft 14' amuminum that my uncle owns. As long as you don't care that you aren't planing, it pushes it along great. As was mentioned, pretty much any small aluminum boat will go great with it as long as you aren't concerned with speed.
