I have a 1964 40hs johnson rkl-26r electric shift
I got a wiring harness for this motor and someone had cut the wires of to the key switch.
So right now all i have is a bunch of wires coming from a wiring harness. Can anyone tell me what wire goes where from the harness to the switch? I tried a old switch i had from a lawn mower and I could start the motor, but I can't shut it off
Help.

Evening, weinerdog.
First get yourself a keyswitch for magneto ignition.
The White wire should go to the solenoid (start) and goes to the 'S' terminal on the keyswitch
The 'A' terminal on the keyswitch goes to accessories (+12v when the boat is 'on')
The 'Bat' terminal goes to +12v on the battery.
The two small black wires that connect to the magneto up underneath the flywheel connect to the two seperate 'M' terminals. When the switch is in the off position, it connects the two black magneto wires together to kill spark.
The two black magneto wires have a resistance to ground of either 0 ohms (points closed) or around .5 ohms (points open). They should never be connected into the +12v system.

I hope this helps!

4ya,Check with your dealer.I am pretty sure the correct switch has instructions as to where the wires go.It's probably the only switch that will start AND shut off the motor.
DHP

thanks for the help. The information about the magneto wires is what i needed. I took care of that and it starts and shuts off great. I appreciate the help. Next I take it to the lake and give it a try.
