Wiring 2 - 6 volt batteries for fish finder

Howdy everyone: I would like to wire 2 - 6 volt flashlight batteries to operate my Garmin fish finder. In order to get 12 volts, do I need to attach one end of a lead wire to the + terminal of one battery and then to the - terminal of the second battery? If I am correct, the remaining battery terminals would be connected to the fish finder? Thanks in advance for the responses. DuPont
