I have a Johnson 12 / 24 volt trolling motor. I want to extend the control head wiring to the dashboard on my small pontoon. The trolling motor has 0,1,2,3 in one direction and a 3 in the other direction. Is the 3 by itself for reverse? Has anyone tapped off a motor to extend the controls to a dashboard? Any helpful information will be appreciated. Thanks, Bob G.

It can be done. You would need relays to reduce the voltage drop unless the dashboard is real close. The reason that reverse may have only high speed is that reverse is very inefficient so on slow it would be worthless and its not designed to be used over a long period of time. So how are you planning to steer the trolling motor?

I think it will be about 3 and a half feet of wiring. I may not have a voltage drop. I plan on steering with the cable that is already there on the steering wheel. I will see if I can video it when completed. Is there a wiring diagram out there??

You may have to get a voltmeter and work out which wire is which. What kinda of speed control are you going to use from the dash?

O.K.,
Here is a link to the youtube of my trolling motor head being used on the pontoon boat. No relays were needed. I used a u-bolt and part of the bow bracket for the steering link.
