Wire rope replacement

I have some fraying and want to replace the 5/16 cable on my lift. I have done this once before but had a few folks to help keep tension on the cables when winding them on the drive pipe. This time I will need to do it by myself and was wondering if any of you folks have a tip for doing it.

I would call the tech service line of the lift company and ask them as they live and breath pipe drives and lifts.

I don't know who built the dock pretty much a typical over head 4 point lift but I guess I could ask the wire company when I buy it. Thx

the reason I mention it, I know the owners of Davit Master and they walk people thru cable replacments all the time. They even sell cable kits with instructions to help the customers (the kits are cheaper than buying bulk cable)

I planned on passing it along after I tried it, so take this info at your own risk until I give it a go but it seems so simple it should work well on smaller rope. simply take 2 2x4 blocks about 6 inch long and cut a shallow groove about half the diameter of the rope across one of the blocks and then place the rope in the groove and screw the other block over it, slide the assembly up the rope to the turning blocks on your lift, tighten the screws some, and turn the lift on and watch it spool up..
I'll get back after I actually do it but it seems too easy even for me to screw it up..LOL

I was thinking to tie the cable around the wife when she was sitting on the lounger. Figured she had enough ballast to keep the cable tight. Good thing her swimsuit is green, or the grass stains would get her mad.

I installed the cables and the 2x4s worked great but remember it's a one way street, no backing up.
