I picked up a quicksilver control box with harness for my 1982 40hp twin. After getting it home I realised that my old piece of harness I had has a wire out of the loom connecting to the engine harness. What is this wire. Any help would be awesome. I hope its not gonna be a major issue

I can't help you with your question, but I wanted to compliment you on your screen name. Vonnegut is my favorite!

Re: wire question

No the box I picked up is newer. I believe the wire is beige. It comes from the engine harness does not go threw the barrel connector and hooks up to the controller harness. The new one doesn't have this wire. When I got the engine the guy cut the controller harness and left the barrel connection on the engine and 3ft of wire. Where the two connect together there's one wire with a male to female connector in a clear shield. The new harness doesn't have it.

Re: wire question

If it is a tan colour, it would be for the temperature switch going forward to the warning horn in the remote or to a temp gauge on the panel. Do you have any switches mounted on item 34 cover in this link?

Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - CYLINDER BLOCK CRANKCASE AND COVERS - MERC 40

If not, it may be one of the old mercury filled tilt/kill switches, item 24 in this link:

Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - CYLINDER BLOCK AND THERMOSTAT - MERC 40

Can you tell from this link which box you have, possibly 2000 or 3000?

Re: wire question

Why don't you just post it here as that one is too small for me. Maybe someone with better eyes can see what it is.
