Re: Winterizing question - making sure all water out

I don't know your engine but typically there's more than one line at the thermostat. On my engine there are three. The raw water inlet, the inlet to the water circulating pump and the outlet to the exhaust manifold.

Merc instructions say to remove the thermostat housing, remove and inspect the thermostat and pour the A/F into the block through the housing. The also say to remove and drain all water hoses on the engine including the intlet line to the power steering cooler. If you follow the raw water inlet back to the transom you should find your PS oil cooler if in fact you have one.

The former owner didn't follow these instructions. When I removed the T-stat housing the stat was badly corroded and sprung open. Temperature sender was also bad. I think it's a good idea to annually inspect the T-stat and for the cost of a new gasket it will provide assurance that the critical component like the t-stat ($20 part) is still in good working order.

I've read where some of the posters here change them annually.

Re: Winterizing question - making sure all water out

Now I am second guessing myself. I think I will pour Anti freeze into the hoses this year to make sure I got all the water ou, and then store it dry.

Can I just pour into the line at the thermostat?

How do I tell if I have an oil or power steering cooler?

Cheers

The coolers are usually plumbed into the supply hose from the drive to the engine. My PS cooler is under the rt side of the engine.

Thanks for the info Searay & JT.

If I don't have a gasket for the T-stat I guess I can pull the three hoses, assuming mine is the same.

I will look this weekend.

Cheers
