I have been told to put my outboard motor (60 hp Johnson)away using several tactics by the previous owner and other boaters. The owner told me to run the engine, with help have someone pour antifreeze through the earmuffs (with hose and funnel)then fog out the engine until it stalls. Then replace the gear oil and cover.
This would not allow me to empty the gas out of the carb bowls as it would if I ran the engine dry. I had to have the carburetors rebuilt after buying the boat due to old gas residue and varnish from extended storage. Which is the better winterizing method?

Howdy, Montauk.

Go to the Engine FAQ section and read up on winterizing. Some good advice there.

Forget the anti-freeze. Just store the engine upright.

Good luck. :)

Agreed, forget the anti-freeze and run fuel stabilzer through the carbs first and you should be alright next season, you can always pull the fuel line and let it run out a bit and then blow fogging oil through it. I like to coat the engine with some WD-40 before I put it away also. Good Luck.
