Are we talking about a drain plug on the carb bowl?

My 1980 Johnson 5.5 hp does not have a carb drain . . . So I run it dry.

I think my 1969 Mercury does have a carb drain plug . . But. I run it dry anyway.

My Drain plug screw is nearly impossible to get at without taking out the carb...

I couldn't find a parts diagram for 1980 5.5, it had a 4.5 and 7.5

I believe that Johnson made some motors with a 4.5hp Carb, and some with 7.5hp Carb. I believe it was also to have a higher H.P, with a lower end cost to out-price the competition. The 7.5hp Carbs were most likely tuned down to 5.5hp.

I agree with Racerone on the timing before spraying fogging oil into the carb. After doing it a while I can hear when it is about 10 seconds away from running out of fuel, RPMS will slightly start to increase as it leans out, when you hear this fog until it dies, and I pull the choke at the same time.

Now some misconceptions I read in this thread. Fogging IS necessary, especially in climates like we get here in Canada, but also anywhere, for long term longevity of the motor. Will your motor likey be fine in the spring if you dont fog? Yeah, probably, BUT over the life of the motor, every year it sits untreated, fast tracks its death.

While it is true, that oil is distributed on the last run of the season via the fuel oil mix, the problem is, that 2 stroke outboard oil is meant to burn, NOT to protect long term. It simply does not last, and then you could start getting pitting on crank journals, etc....

Fogging oil is engineered differently. It is meant to PROTECT, not BURN. Different animal all together. Not just a snake oil.

Just my 2 cents.

I normally don't do anything, I just shut the motor off and leave it.
