I know its a bit early yet but I was wondering what a person needs to do to winterize a 2 stroke boat motor. I have a 10hp mont. ward ( I beleive ) 1975 motor that is in excelent condition and would like to keep her that way. Thanx in advance.

Middleground:
The fall gearcase change was suggested to me to prevent leaving any water in the gear oil during th winter. I was told that if it freezes, it could do some damage. Made sense to me.

Charles

Amen on fall change of gearcase lube. I didn't on a Merc Mark 5 and it froze and broke the threads in the lower unit.
Jim

Re: winterizing boat motor

If you live in a relatively warm area (Charleston, SC)and plan to store your boat in the garage over the winter, what steps are necessary to winterize the engine? I have a 25 hp Johnson outboard that is 1-2 years old.

I'm thinking about lubrication and draining the gas out of the engine- could you further explain decarbonizing? Oh, and the gearcase oil....

My thoughts ! not a big fan of decarbonizing.
always caused more problems than what it prevented
or did.
Fall/winter
Sta-bil in tanks and run to open thermostats
Then change gear oil
I pull plugs and fog oil in cly's turn over by hand and fog again, put plugs back in
Grease zerks
grease prop shaft spline
Put motor in full down position alows water to drainTake battery out

Spring/start of season
Change plugs
Change water pump if needed
charge battery

Just my ways

Rich
Chk
