Greetings everyone!? I'm new to boating, but I am a person who likes a challenge. Another long term goal is to educate my children about many things in life; like BOATING!

About 2 months ago, I got an 'itch' to get a boat. I grew up with little boats for the river, but I wanted a BOAT! A boat that many people can ride in, and most importantly, a radio!

After feverishly looking in the newspaper and CL, I found what I believe to be my pride and joy.

Please notice me pictures, and let me know of any advice/comments/suggestions/etc. I am very open minded.

If I have not mentioned yet, I LOVE this site. Very informative. If I get my boat done, I will be attending the gathering also (if I am eligible!).

**I'm going to try and add a pic, more comments later. :)

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

Thanks for all the warm welcomes thus far. I am still excited to feel surrounded by people with the same interest and a passion to exert knowledge.

Speaking of knowledge, can anyone help with the following questions? *I know some questions are months from being decided, but something I think about allllllll day!:D Also, forgive me in advance for my stupidity (I'm new to boating).

1) Does a Starcraft (Jupiter, namely) have to be a certain color? I know the traditional colors, but what about purple and white?

2) Are Mercury 650 EL (65 HP) good? Also, I found these motors on iboats, and they mention being a saltwater motor. Can saltwater motors be in fresh, but fresh not be in salt?....kind of like a square is a rectangle, but a rectange is not a square!?

3) Can I charge a marine battery like my vehicle batterys? Should they be stored for winter, any prep?

4) Are windshields necesarry (for either authenticity, or practical reasons)? I LOVE it, but one of the joints needs some help.

5) Has anyone seen a Jupiter with a deck (like a REAL deck.....thompson sealed, deep color) on the front/top? I thought that would be a cool idea.

6) How do you get a name for a boat? Inspiration, is it something passed on, like truck drivers?

7) Do I sound like a 13 year old girl? Again, I'm EXCITED to get started!

Thanks again for all the warm welcomes. I look forward to everyone's imput. I'm also very savy with computers, so I think it might be in my best interest to do a step-by-step on the boat restoration.

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

1. You can paint your Starcraft any color you'd like. There is a post at the top of this forum section with links to the old brochures if you want to see what some of the original colors were.

2. Some Mercurys are tough to get parts for. Not sure if yours is one of those. If you're concerned I'd throw a post up in the Merc repair section. It's probably a pretty good motor. A 65 will move your Jupiter fine.

3. Yes. Invest in a newer charged that switches over to a trickle charger when the battery is fully charged. That prevents you from cooking it. You can put it on a battery maintainer over the winter if you like but I never have an my starting battery is over 5 years old now and still fine.

4. Not really necessary but they do a good job of deflecting the wind off of your face. I sat above the windshield in my Jupiter and it still deflected the wind. Plus they do really look like they're missing something without it. I'm sure yours is fixable.

5. Nope. Sounds cool though. You will want to reinforce that area if you intend to regularly walk on it. It's just 1x stock under there for support. Also Thompson's is udderly worthless for waterproofing.

6. No clue. You have to come up with it yourself. I've never understood the people here who ask for help on it.

7. Of course not. If you want to share your excitment, set up an MSN messenger account and join us for our nightly chats. PM Rickairmedic if you need more info.

Welcome to iboats and the Starcraft club. I loved my Jupiter and just sold it a month ago for a good price. It rode rough in the chop but was a very stable hull. Pics of mine here: http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/Boat Project/

Hooverloser welcome to the forum:D

It's always nice to hear someone as excited about their new boat as you seem to be;) Especially if it's a Starcraft:)

Seems like EZ took care of most of your questions, I would agree with his comments.

Do you plan on waterskiing, fishing, or just cruising? If skiing you may want more hp but if not that's plenty for cruising around.

What year is that Merc 65hp? I've got a 1970 Merc 80hp and I did some research before buying it...folks claim that parts are available.

What you may consider is to buy another old Merc for parts if you can find one cheap that has bad compression or other issues.

Also, I am considering organizing a Great Lakes region Starcraft get-together at some point in the future since there are a bunch of us on the site from this area(I live just north of Lansing, MI) and we all love our Starcrafts:D

Just another SC owner/lover welcoming you to our obsession. EZ has answered your ?s well but if you have more do not hesitate to ask. Look forward to seeing what you and your family do with the boat.

And nothing says you have to name it at all.

Hoover EZ did a pretty good job of answering your questions . I agree with him none of us have really gone back original with our paint although I did notice mine isnt that far off as the 71 Jupiter was Red and mine is a 70 although I did switch it up a little with some white and stripes . The messenger deal is pretty cool alot of us Starcrafters get together pretty regularly at night between 7PM and 11PM to chat on Live messenger ( used to be MSN ) you can google Live messenger to get most of the info you need to setup an account. Once you have an account you can send me a message my user ID in the same as my name here @hotmail.com.

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

I'm back! Thanks again for all the comments, hints.

My goals for this weekend are as follows:

1) Remove motor (should I disconnect all the controls? It seems like hole in my splashwell is not big enough for all the wires to go through.

2) Check the severity of pitting (I noticed a little, all along the water line).

3) Move boat in garage. My wife will REALLY love me then! :D

4) Pictures, pictures, pictures! I hope no one minds, but I have been addicted to checking out everyone's photos. I hope to do the same, and give detail, with plenty of room for comments.

5) GUT the whole boat!

I'm going to post pics right after this. Be honest

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

As promised, pictures. I'm thinking (again, maybe premature) about seating arrangements.

Unless convinced otherwise, I want a NICE captains chair for me, and nothing to my left (good idea?). I also thought about two bench seat in the back, facing each other.

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

Hoover as far as seating theres not alot of room in our Jupiters . My eventual plan is 2 captains chairs up front and a full width bench across the back ( most likely I will build and upholster them myself ) . To get her on the water I ended up picking up a really clean pair of back to backs REALLY cheap. I will most likely run these for a while until I get around to building my final seats .EZ had 2 back to backs in hios Jupiter with 2 seats in the stern as well.I dont think there is really enough room in the back for 2 bench seats unless you know alot of realy short people :D.

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

Update: Today, with high 60 degrees in northern Indiana, I had to work on the boat outside after hunting

! I got the motor dismounted, tanks out, both side walls taken out, no more seats, and got rid of all the false wiring. All this gave me such a rush thinking of what the future is for this boat.

Tomorrow, my hopes are to get the boat inside, and finish with gutting the interior. I also hope to get all the wood removed this week, and start sanding.

While I'm dreaming, maybe I'll get some COOL boating items from Christmas:D!

Expect pictures tomorrow.

Also, I think the seating arrangment and paint scheme have changed. One bench in the rear and paint that reminds you of a very dull yellow (I'll think of something to compare with). I also want to incorpate a lot of wood accents (mahogany, or deep dark cherry?).

1) Does a Starcraft (Jupiter, namely) have to be a certain color? I know the traditional colors, but what about purple and white?

Most people have been going with 2 tone colors, but like EZ said you are free to do what ever. most jupiters were 1 solid color.

2) Are Mercury 650 EL (65 HP) good? Also, I found these motors on iboats, and they mention being a saltwater motor. Can saltwater motors be in fresh, but fresh not be in salt?....kind of like a square is a rectangle, but a rectange is not a square!?

merc are good motors, and the 65 hp should do good. i have a 50 on mine and move about 26mph.

3) Can I charge a marine battery like my vehicle batterys? Should they be stored for winter, any prep?
you should take it out of the boat and store it on wood (not concrete)

4) Are windshields necesarry (for either authenticity, or practical reasons)? I LOVE it, but one of the joints needs some help.
i would not remove it personally, first because of the wind... i guess thats why its a windshield! lol

5) Has anyone seen a Jupiter with a deck (like a REAL deck.....thompson sealed, deep color) on the front/top? I thought that would be a cool idea.

sounds like a good idea, but probably alot more work than its worth...

6) How do you get a name for a boat? Inspiration, is it something passed on, like truck drivers?
i ended up naming mine "bonnie and clyde" for me and my wife, but i was origionally going to name it STOLEN because i practially stole it from the guy i bought it from

i have back to back in mine and think there is still room for a bench in the back. the only downside is weight distribution.

there is a link in my sig to my resto thread, and heres my share a project site.. http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/imageDetail,p,532,i,9085,00.html

I built removable decking sections for my 12' AeroCraft, stained and sealed it. It's worked out great. Resists waters(unless you happen to spill gas on it LOL), is lightweight and strong, and looks pretty nice.

One thing about it is wooden decking- it does get dirty...but I have the advantage of being able to remove them to spray with the hose on both sides to clean it. Not sure how that would work on a bigger boat.

Check out the brochures link in the starcraft section for ideas on colors.

Good luck with the project, that Jupiter will be a nice boat for ya once your finished:)

As always, thanks for any/all comments.

86 Century, you are correct! I 'snagged' this beauty, trading for a guitar that I never used or played. If nothing more, I will get quite an education while working on this boat with my daughter (lessons in boating, restoration, life, and women!!!! AHHHHH!!).

I can get to Jonesboro in about 1.25 hours, so maybe next summer we can meet at Mississinewa lake.

I'm excited (SOOO excited) to actually get started. This week, the boat is going in the garage, and I will finish gutting. Once I have it in the garage, pictures will be more often.

Re: Winter=Dad+daughter+lots of work! (new to boating)

I personally recommend CPES from ROTDOCTOR.com over ANY other waterproofing or sealant especially Thompsons.. there are others on this forum and others that will advise you to stay away from thompsons. I did 2 sides of my transom 4'x6' with 1qt mix(each side) of a 2qt kit and I break screwdriver bits putting in screws without drilling pilot holes.. (no kidding) I'll be bringing a sample to TINSTOCK.. I plan on using CPES on my floor before painting it.. I'll tell you that plain Epoxy Spray Paint adhere'd very well to the CPES'd transom with 2 light coats it's very well covered.
