The winch strap on my trailer tends to release itself under load conditions. Is there a rebuild kit for the mechanism, spring and whatever or should it just be replaced? Thanks.

Re: Winch repair

replace winch. Fulton is a quality winch, and will last, worth the money.

Re: Winch repair

That is what I was thinking Tashasdaddy, one less thing to worry about if replaced, and not expensive either. Should the old mounting holes line up with the new replacement? I would think that they are standard by that manufacturer.

Great that solves it. This one is 22 yrs. old, but I think corrosion had done its job on it.

They are beautiful thanks for sharing your experience. But I think we might have one more boat in the future and it will be something along the lines of the Ciera class Bayliner, used one of course! Maybe a retirement package special.

Update:
finally got around to taking the old winch off the trailer today. A number of teeth in the gears were rusted out, completely missing- no wonder it failed under load!
thanks for urging me to replace it, will do it this weekend.

Since I don't have a trailer parts store or marina close to me, I got a winch at Wally World- Reese manufacturing company. Anyone know if these are any good?

I was going to ask how your winch was releasing tension but this sure explains why.

It'll work. I've got a Reese winch on my sled trailer. Not quite as good as a Fulton, but it should hold for a good number of years. Keep it lubed and it'll keep the rust monster away longer! :)

Re: Winch repair

Thanks just set it up yesterday and will try it this coming weekend.
Its tough with no local marine parts dealer, everything must be shipped to me or travel some distance to a parts store!
