Good post and I agree. They are sometimes called "chill pads" and they do a good job of pulling heat away from the bottom of the laptop. There are usually a couple of fans, plus they typically provide four more USB ports.

BTW, lots of folks like to place a laptop on a bed and work on it. Bad idea! The bed covers will act like an insulator and cause the laptop to heat up more than normal.

My experience is that Dells (I have had five different units for work) don't require the pads. I've never used one and also never had one die on me. In the family we have had Sony, Toshiba and HP laptops and they all had cooling issues, the Toshiba was a disaster.

Totally agree on the bed thing and actually discussed that with my wife after I got the thread's unit going and she watched a DVD on it in bed. Vacuuming the air intake ports out is another good tip.

Do you have a link for one? I googled one from Dell but they did not give the thickness or say how it was powered.

I also see some on fleabay but have not studied them yet. They are even less expensive, in fact, so much so they make me suspicious as to their durability. Here is one, for example. This one does give a thickness but still does not say whether it is powered thru the USB connection and if it turns on and off with the computer.

Mrs WO uses a Dell Laptop on her kitchen desk. It runs warmer than she would like but I don't think it would be too comfortable if the cooler raised the computer up off the desk by much. It would also be a PITA if you had to seperately turn it off when you shut the computer down. Do they make much noise?

It would also be nice to have the extra USB ports.

ps, QC, glad you got the thing working. It was the F11 thing I did not remember.

You can buy them in most retail stores that carry computers and accessories. They do raise the computer up slightly, but you'll get used to it quickly. The fans are quiet until they start to go bad. How long that takes is a function of how well they are built - buy a cheap one and it will happen in a few months, if you let the fans run 24/7. They are powered by a "wall wart" (inverter) and usually do have to be turned off separately. I guess some of them are powered by the USB connection to the computer, but I have never used one.

While chill pads have a few drawbacks, I don't consider any of them to be a big deal and I would much rather extend the life of my laptop, by using one.
