Gotcha, im gonna stick to my 14's for now and see how it goes. At least this way if something breaks on the trailer, that's one less inch to fall I guess, lol.

Bruce, I do plan on getting a different trailer next year. I just want to make sure it will get me back from where the boat is stored, 2.5 hours away...
By the way, by the time you put in fuel, water and gear, you are going to be pushing 6000" for the total load. The trailer likely weighs over 1000#. Personally, I would be getting a different trailer.

I think I missed that part when you said it earlier about the new trailer.

I would make sure the brakes work before you did any towing with it. You can jack up the wheels and apply the brakes manually by pushing on the coupler and making sure the wheels lock up. Its sort of a sanity check as it doesn't tell you how well the brakes work but at least it shows you don't have a locked up master cylinder or wheel cylinder that needs attention.

Eric...do you have one or two brake axles? Have you pulled all of your wheel bearings and cleaned/inspected/replaced them?

There are 10 inch drum brakes on one axel, and no I haven't pulled anything. I just got back from Ohio from picking it up. I do plan on it in the summer though.

Empty the boats fuel and water tanks and move ALL gear including batteries to the tow vehicle before towing and you will have a MUCH better chance of not overloading the trailer.

The guy I bought it from told me a bit ago that he had a 5500 pound boat on it. Its not that I don't believe him, I don't believe anybody, lol

Ayuh,.... Unless yer gonna pull the hubs, inspect the bearin's, 'n repack the bearin's,... Before this trip,...

I'd bring along a spare hub, loaded with fresh packed bearin's, in a mounted spare tire, 'n enough tools to change it on the road,...

Which means you need to do as mentioned above and pull a hub to measure the bearing journals to determine what bearings you need:) ........ only takes a few minutes.

My friend has a 23ft. Chaparral Sunesta with a very similar trailer under it other than the tongue design is a lot newer and way different. The max GVWR is only 5,720 with a GAWR of 2860 leaving only a MAX LOAD CAP. of 4400 lbs. providing the tires are correct for the axles. His axles are round and I have always found with farm equipment trailers, square axles are always rated lower in GAWR.

He too only had one brake axle, dead give away is the brake line on one axle and not the other, and was told the brakes were "rock solid"; the only reason they were "rock solid" is they didn't work at all.

Check the condition of the fluid in the master cylinder. It should be fairly clear in color and not murky. If it is not, the whole system should be purged even if the master cylinder locks the wheel during your testing. If it is not synthetic fluid, any moisture that might have entered the system will mix and can cause a very corrosive combination. Just because there are no leaks does not mean you have brakes; there may be no fluid left to leak.

Surge brakes can get really expensive real quick and you can not buy a repair kit for the master cylinder from most of the manufacturers as in the case with his. The master cylinder can run around a couple hundred real easy, wheel cylinders around seventy, shoes for the axle another seventy, with lines, couplers, fittings, and the three hoses running another hundred not to mention brake fluid.

I would start here at iboats. They have almost everything you would need. We went from one end to the other on his while he had a slip rented this summer. It was all real easy to do and no biggie and only took a couple of hours. Also, unless they specialize in marine, most auto parts stores won't carry more than the lines, hoses, and fluid.

IMO, If I was going to make a 2 and 1/2 hour trip, I would do it with a different trailer or you may wind up with it being a 2 and 1/2 day trip or possibly boat rubble along the highway.

+1 ^^^^

This says it all, and I'm in agreement. The proof is in the pudding. You have only one brake axle. And you don't even know if the brakes are functioning PERFECTLY. I wouldn't risk my life yanking that boat down the highway for 2 1/2 hours unless the brakes were working flawlessly. OR, you were using a tow vehicle that could overcome the kinetic energy of the boat with it's own brakes (like a semi-tractor) One last thought. It is better to err on the side of caution, and be called a nervous Nancy, than to be caught with your pants around your ankles and get scalped. I really do hope you get your boat to it's destination safely.
