Wil not go into gear

Hi everyone.. I have a 1989 raven it has a alpha mercursier 3.0.. I had prop damange and went to a maraine liquidator and bought a used prop it is a 15 degree pitch and the boat came with a 18 degree pitdh..The guy at the shop said it may cause higher RPM,s and it did so I ran it slower.But after a day of pulling a tube and went back out the next morning to fish it ran fine for a while was ready to tralier the boat and it ran hot and would not go back into gear.I check the perpeller and in gear i could still turn it but it never would lock in gear like before when I put the other prop on.Could the lower pitch prop have caused damage to my lower unit?? Can someone please help.
