Re: Why use hooks on safety chain when towing?
After driving semi for awhile, I decided that the only way to secure the coupler to the ball was with a lock. If the coupler is on and closed, and the lock is in place, it won't come off, barring a severe impact.

Seen the consequences of pranksters at truck stops, rest areas, and gas stations. Seen kingpins released and rear sliding axles released. The result of the first is a trailer nose down on the pavement. The result of the second, is the rear axles ripped off the trailer the first time the brakes are applied.

The truckstop on hwy 41 at the Illinois WI border has its own onranp to the hwy. The next time you hit the brakes is at the toll booth. Wham!!, the rear axle brakes stop the rear axles, but the rest of the rig keeps going. Splat!! Ever seen 36,000# of corn on the road?? Or 45,000# of paper? I have.

I've also seen/caught kids pulling the plug out of a boat at a gas station while the owner was inside paying the bill.
