I have a 62 Evinrude outboard with Unicharger electric starting unit. After replacing the battery cables due to corrosion and cleaning all of the contacts, wire connections, etc. when I attempt to connect the battery, the starter engages, but the key is off! What is going on. I suspect the starter solenoid in the Unicharger is faulty, but am not sure. Would appreciate any input.

Re: Why is this this starting?

It could be a shorted solenoid, or a shorted ignition key (Start terminal). Try disconnecting the start terminal from the ignition switch. If still cranking, disconnect at solenoid. If it still cranks,it's short in solenoid. If it doesn't,the wire harness has the short.

------------------
Quater Horse; The kiddy ride in front of K-Mart.
