So ....The real question is....Are American bull frogs tastier than their French counterparts? Now, THAT'S a debate! :) I must admit that I do like escargot......JK

Re: Why is the French so disliked among us

All you have to do to hate the French is to look at what happened there in the last week. while lawless, criminal thugs were burning 300 cities, all the french government and police could do was watch and be murdered while they were considering using such drastic measures as RUBBER BULLETS ! Chirac is a dissgrace as he hangs his head and says that they failed these poor imigrant people. As usual, appologize, beg, appease and beg the forgiveness of lowlife, lawless scum ! While I question if my government still has the balls to maintain order when the low-lifes go wild, one thing I am sure of, myself and my fellow Americans in my neighborhood will. I can't say what would happen in many parts of this country, but around here....just try burning houses and cars.....it will not be rubber bullets fired at you ! The French...they would be too worried what someone might think if they stood up for themselves.

Re: Why is the French so disliked among us

if ya wanna see arrogant americans in action go to any store that has hired foriegn exchange students and see how the average american treats them as they struggle with the language, cultural and financial differences. several times I have apologized to the poor student after a fellow american totaly embarresed them and explained we are not all rude arse people. many I invite home and to outings to show them how life is here. I have a good time and so do they. trying to teach some lithuainians how to water ski was a blast :) :) .

Rodbolt - bless you for going out of your way to demonstrate some hospitality and generosity!

In the US, I've met some of the greatest people - and some of the worst. It is people like Rodbolt here that help visitors understand that Americans can be much more enlightened and diverse than the rest of the world may think.

Ron: c'mon man, you don't like smashed bull b@lls with ranch dressing?

Rodbolt:EXCELLENT.....a lot of people should understand the laws of Kharma.....myself, being a shamanistic buddhist believe everyone is beautiful, even if they haven't yet found themselves. it's up to the REAL higher class people, such as yourself to help push that along.
three cheers for you!

Watertone:tell you what buddy, every other person here in colorado has some type of hunting mechanism. i myself have a P&H 7mm RemMag, couple shotguns, etc.(yeah i know, not very buddhist-like, but, i respect everything that gives it's life to help feed me and my family), anyway, if that kind of rioting started here, i know several hundered people in my little corner of the world that would pull a red-coat style march right through the city and clean it up straight away!

Medoc: our bullfrogs are bigger and more filling :D

Stevens: You sound like an outstanding individual, I'd like to meet you in person. you sound very down to earth. plus i'm part norse, hey, we have something in common there, besides, we all own boats.

On a personal note: i am actually 1/4 french, 3/4 norwegian. i grew up in north dakota and have been to canada many times, albeit only sask., and manit. never came across a frenchman there and don't really understand why they HAVE to learn french, sounds silly to me. it would be like forcing us to learn mexican  which is where i have way, WAY more problems with than french. i have some mexi friends, but the ones i speak of are true wetbacks, here illegally, taking our jobs for dirt wages. another thread in itself. my mom's name is Levesque. mine, Olson. i have never been to france, but mom and granpa Levesque have. both were SORELY disappointed! can't say much more than that. i have no intention of EVER going to france. i won't pass true judgement on them all, based on the few encounters i've had. BUT, if they are all like the few i've met, and that my grandad and mom experienced, then they can go ahead and shove that Eifle Tower straight up where the sun don't shine!

Alumistar - thanks for the compliment. You should tell my boss and my wife! But, sorry to say, I am just your average avid boater with a mid-life crisis and three-foot-itis! :D

Sorry your folks had such a ****ty experience with France. It can also be a truly beautiful and romantic place, but you have to approch it with some humility and tact. The American outgoing way of being is often (& unjustly) interpreted as the opposite and that apparently may lead to some problems.

Re: Why is the French so disliked among us

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe French wine is actually American wine. I seem to remember being told that some years ago (early 1900's?)there was some kind of blight that wiped out all the French grape vines. It was us arrogent Americans that sent them replacements. Like I said, I don't know if this is true and I'm too lazy to to do a search on the subject.

I have had a personal run-in with the French, in a campground in Greenbelt, Md. I came back to my site to find a motorhome parked in it. There was my tent, and other gear, right there in front of them, plenty of open campsites, and they park in mine. Had to ask them to please find another space. They wanted to argue. I should find another space! They moved, but not without saying "and they wonder why we don't like Americans."

"I believe French wine is actually American wine".

Well, I used to be in this business, so here goes: In the period from 1870-1900, the roots of winestocks all over Europe were attacked by a bug called Phyloxera, wiping out the vines. However, American vines were resistant. To this day, wine all over the world (except maybe Chile) is produced on American roots, with the local vines grafted on top. So, local grapes, American roots.

Re: Why is the French so disliked among us

ya know. in my limited travels I have found folks really treat me like I treat them.
I got left in caracas for some time bymyself cause my fiance had work to do. I went out on the town alone. couple that with the fact I speak no spanish it was a rather wild time, but I found if you make them understand all ya want is a beer and a smoke and maybe some type of talk its mostly good. I actually had a good time.
found a few folk that actually took me to their home and we chatted, rather limited, and had a coffee, rather strong and in tiny cups, but most of them are just like us, all they wish is a good stable job and the same or better for their kids. its the politicians that F**k everything up.
on all sides

Re: Why is the French so disliked among us

I think that the French are so disliked here because they are unwilling to admit that they needed any help over the previous century getting their butts bailed out.

The UK people are gracious and know how to say thank you without bowing and scraping, & accepted the US as partners. Not that there weren't "differences of opinion", but the relationship works.

However...

The resentment that the French Revolution didn't work out as well as the American Revolution, and the fact that since the Franco-Prussian War, France hasn't been all that successful militarily (up until then, they were a POWERHOUSE, builds for bad blood.

I like a good Armagnac, and Roquefort, and Calvados, and Jerry Lewis - but they detest cheeseburgers, and eating lobsters with our hands and having butter drip off your elbows, and they don't get our humor (other than Jerry Lewis).

Besides - weren't they the reason we got into Viet Nam? (Dien Ben Phu?)

I'm more than willing to cut anyone some slack, but my feeling is that I'll get NO slack from the French - it seems like vive le diference only works one way.

Just my one-fiftieth of a dollar.
