Why is my tach bouncing all over the place?

can someone tell me what would cause my rpm gauge to bounce all over the place... sometimes it works fine but most the time is all over the place. this is a 1997 evinrude intruder 150hp. thanks

Happens on my boat as well. Not sure you can do anything about it. Seems I read that response from a boater with the same problem. The guy explained why it happens but I can't remember his answer. Sorry I'm not much help. I just quit worrying about it on my boat. Like you said....sometimes it works. Sometimes it don't.

Loose connections, bad rectifier/regulator or tach.

Check for corrosion at the connections in back of tach and as Boobie said make sure they are tight and clean.
