Re: Why is it so hard to find an honest marine mechanic?

I really need to get of my lazy butt and learn how to work on my engine.

The shop I have been using is/was a 2 man operation that did really good work at reasonable rates. The owner has pretty severe health problems, so they have hired some additional help. The additional help leaves something to be desired.

I recently bought a merc inline 6 from them. The owner said the engine would get new impeller, the lower unit checked and carbs rebuilt and I got a 90 day warranty.(the compression was good on all cylinders) One of the solenoids on the T&T died within a week, no biggie, its an old motor. Last weekend I had planned to take it out, but had an emergency.

I noticed a small puddle of milky looking gear oil under the skeg. The mechanic had told me they had lake tested the engine, so I thought maybe a bad seal in the lower unit. I took out the drain plug(which had 3 seals on it) and nothing came out. So, I took the vent screw out, still nothing.

I think the owner about died of embarrassment when I told him what I found. He couldnt apologize enough and swore he would check the lower unit personally. Evidently the new tech was supposed to fill the lower unit, got sidetracked and put an new seal on an said he was finished.
