What is it about boating anyway? Why did you buy your first boat? What made you decide to move up to a bigger boat? I guess we all have our reasons and they're all more different than similar I'm sure, even though we all share the same passion. Just curious... :)

Why are you a boater?

My first boat was my dad's tri hull bass boat with a 35hp mercruiser. It was sitting in storage for about 10 years and needed gutted and re wired. After a spring and summer of working on it, I took it out for a sea trial. The minute I hit the water, I was hooked! Can't explain what it is but I love boating. That was four boats ago and Im now on a 23' Sea Ray

For me I have kids and kids have friends and I remembered a song that said no ones head stone ever said "If I only spent more time at work"...My boat mechanic said the #1 thing with a boat is to make sure it has enough power to justify the cost and that it works with your family size...22' deckboat with a 5.0 VP GXiC has power to spare for what we use it for...

When I'm on my boat, I'm in charge and off the clock.

On the water is the only place I feel truly 'free' I guess. Away from "it all". Whether slinging someone around in a tube, or just cruising down the river on perfect glass...watching nature go by...I am at peace.

Man...that just made me hate this friggin place THAT much MORE!

Ya, its the ultimate get away from it all, me and my wife call Lake Powell Idontgivea****ville, I can't explain it any better, why did I buy a bigger boat? couple reasons, I want a sunpad for my wife to sunbathe on....Check, I wanted something sporty and fast.....Check, I wanted something bigger to take the waves better and be easier on my wifes back....Check, I wanted a sunpad for my wife.......OOPS. I see a bunch of people that sell their boats when the kids get older and they just don't spend as much time on their boat, I just don't get it? My kids are either in College or in High School and as they spend less time on the boat it just makes more and more me and the wife time , win win!!

Because swimmin' is too hard, especially with 400 lbs of bass tackle.

I like to fish and fishing from a boat is better than fishing from the bank.

Beyond the fishing aspect, as soon as you jump in your boat and point it away from shore, it feels like a huge weight has been lifted. Instant relaxation...........

Re: Whay Are You A Boater?

One of my earliest memories as a kid was sitting in my Uncle Charlie's lap and riding in his boat. Fifty years later its still seared in my memory. My Dad and a few of my Uncles were all merchant seamen, and I ended up going to a Merchant Maritime academy and doing same. I have a boat because I just gotta have a boat. I keep it in the garage so I can go out and pet it every so often. I really didn't care about fishing too much because I just wanted to cruise. But once I started fishing, and catching fish, and going offshore and catching fish, well then that just became one more thing to spend money on. I love the coast, I love boats and I love to take my daughter out fishing and cruisng. It's a genetic defect that runs in my family. I think I've managed to infect my daughter as well. ;)

Re: Whay Are You A Boater?

Was almost born on a lake ... family always boated and at the age of 12 I inherited my Grandfather's boat (12 ft tinny with a 3.9 outboard). Moved up to a 15ft bass boat with a 40hp sitting on the back ... all kinds of problems with the engine so changed to a Johnny with a 55hp (over-rated as per the plate, but fun)! That engine blew up several years later, and taking her to my dealer, the trailer wheel broke! Definitely time for a new bass boat - 16ft Skeeter with a Johnny 88sp.

First and only new boat I owned (1983 and still have her, but she is for sale). Married a gal that never boated before and not real big on the bass boat, but gave me permission to "look" at other boats. 2 summers ago found what I was looking for, a dual console, 19footer that would still fit in the garage, had a nice layout for fishing, and could still be a good family boat, AT MY PRICE (yea, I am cheap). First trip out she LOVED it. Now she bugs me to take to the boat out!

As already said, only on the water do all the cares of the day melt away. During extremely stressful and trying times, that is where we head. The water is the best therapy there is, bar none! When my MIL passed away we headed to the water, when my wife had a miscarriage, we headed to the water ... just nothing like the soothing of the water. And even better yet, that is where the fish live! So if you can have your cares melt away while being in the middle of the fishes dining room, well, it just doesn't get any better than that!

Re: Whay Are You A Boater?

My parents were boaters and I started at 2 months old and have never stopped. It is in my blood and hopefully my kids too. My first boat was an 8 foot wood and glass hydroplane I built as a young teen in the garage from plans I mail ordered. I bought my own 18hp and ran it hard. That boat taught me the value of the tether kill switch. In MN we don't upgrade in boat size only boat brand. An over 20 foot bowrider is a rare sight on all but a few high end lakes. You start with your Bayliner or if you have some extra $, a Glastron and move up the line.

Re: Whay Are You A Boater?

It's the water planet. There's something about water: looking at it, swimming in it, boating over it, skiing over it, fishing in it that just seems like what I was meant to do. I have a job so that I can have a boat.
That said, it has been a great family thing for us and the three kids. Now they are all grown and the oldest (and most financially ready) has a boat of her own.
