Starboard (steering board) is where the pilot belongs. Port is where the mate belongs to manage coming in to port.

Also, most boaters are conservative. . .right wing. . .and wouldn't like being on the left. :)

There have been LOTS of production boat builders over the years that placed the helm on the port side. To offset the prop torque is a valid reason only on small boats.
As has been said, it makes sense from a safety perspective. In a crossing situation you must yield to a vessel closing in from starboard. By placing the helm on the starboard side you have better visibility of vessels that you must yield (or give way) to.
