Why are 2 strokes smaller????

Ok, it's a stupid question but I have an early 80's 85 hp merc out board. The new 4 strokes I see out look like they are twice the size. All that room can't be for oil reservoir.<br /><br />Thanks in advance.<br /><br />~Chris

4-strokes have to contend with a large valve and cam arrangement.
