Whose Neighbors Hate the Poly Resin Odor From Your Restore?

I did the bulk of my restore (deck and stringers) on the side yard (south side) of my house and didn't have one complaint - even though I used 7 gallons of poly resin.

I am now doing my transom in my driveway (can't get the cherry picker/engine puller on my side yard). I have only used 1/2 gallon of resin so far and have had multiple complaints from the neighbor on the other (North) side. I guess I see his point -- that stuff does stink. ...and if the wind blows just right, it goes right in his house.

I guess I will move the boat before I glass in the transom this weekend.

As I always said ... If you smell it .. not good ..

Some are Very sensitive to the chemicals in resin ( styrene, mekp, acetone,Glass shards ( which spread across the neighborhood ( which Im not saying you have ) etc. ).

Good to be on the safe side of others when doing a DIY resto in your back/side yards :) . Everything about it is .. lets say worse off then smelling cooked steak from your next doors .. when your a vegan ;) ...

You are right Yacht Dr. I will certainly be sensitive to my neighbors nostrils. If I ever do another restore, I think I will go with epoxy resin. From what I have been told, its odor is much less than that of poly and the higher cost would be worth not offending anyone.

When I worked in a fiberglass shop, folks would walk in and ask "How can you stand the smell in here?" The answer, of course, was always "What smell?" I remember going out for lunch in work clothes and hearing restaurant workers ask each other if they smelled something burning.

That being said, one must try to keep on good terms with the neighbors. I've been known to sand things, use chemical treatments, spray noxious stuff, and harbor barking dogs. I always try to talk to the neighbors about what I'm up to, watch the wind, and keep the dogs under control.

I have had no problems with neighbors just the wife. I would work in the garage and it would get in the house a bit.
as my wife has asthma it did not bode well. so I kept the garage doors open and a box fan going 24/7
in the window. it stays pretty good but it has been a chore to keep out of the house as my garage is attached to my house.

I kind of like the smell myself. But I'm sure that's just association. The strange thing is, the Missus said she kind of likes the smell too. Go figure. I do always tell the kids, if you can smell it when I?m working, you?re too close. No word from the neighbors. But they?re used to my tools and strange smells and odd hours. One year we put an organic pesticide made from garlic oil on our yard to kill mosquitoes. The whole neighborhood smelled like a salad.
