Whirring Noise

Hello everyone--I have a 1978 20 horse Johnson that runs very strong! No problems! Ever since I've had it (5 months) it makes a whirring noise when I'm picking up speed and during wot. Is this something that I should be concerned about? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Take the cover off and try to tell if the noise is in or around the power head.If not I would guess a lower unit gear problem.Have you changed the oil regularly.If not I would do it now and hope it lasts.<br />Best thing would be to open it up and check it.<br /> If it is bad and lets go it could really cost.

The lower unit is in good shape. Next time I run it I will check the powerhead. Could it be a prop problem? The prop I have on it now works, but is dinged up some.
