Merc 188 V8 engine with pre Alpha lower unit. When do you know the gimble brg needs to be replaced? Lower unit has developed a high pitch whine at full speed. Shifting and throttle all smooth, gear case oil no water. Do we need to worry what tell you a gimble is bad.

gimbal bearings usually make a growling noise at idle ,in or out of gear . pull the drive and inspect the g-bearing and u-joints. not a tuff job and you may enjoy the learning experience.

Re: Whine from lower unit

From my (dreadful) experience, a whine at high speed means a gear or bearing problem, and not from the gimble. My drive had a similar sound just before it blew itself apart last summer. Upper and lower gearsets were ruined, and it cost more than a new drive to fix. So I had to buy a new drive  . Not to mention the tow back to the marina    .Last year was an expensive year!

Arks Amen to that..... Went through same situation last year.. Pull the drive before you make a bad situation worse and have it checked or check it yourself

Tallman
