I've been using Pennsoil synthethic in my rebuilt '76 Merc 850. I noticed in a previous post about a Bayliner that Chalkboy said don't use Pennsoil synthetic. Should I not use Pennsoil? What oil should I use?

Thanks

Call me a traditionalist, but I only use "QuickSilver" oil in my Mercury 140. They know the motor better than Penzoil does so why not use it.

Just my "not so" :) humble opinion

Craig

I've mentioned this before but we use Pennzoil synthetic blend (partial synthetic) as our standard base line test oil. This is based off of many years of racing and high hour severe load tests on outboards.

I'm not saying it's better than the others but no other is better than it. If it wasn't up to the task in your motor, you would know it by now.

Good luck!

Never used it, so no comment about the synthetic.
But the real oil is ashy..Not that ash is bad,it's not. But it does lubricate better, run cooler,at the expense of producing more carbon.
My Force has trouble with it,even tho I still use it on occasion (it's in all the stores on the way to my favorite ramps) :D

The choice of oil is like discussing religion: everyone has an opinion, no one is willing to change, and in the end it is probably all good. For me, it all comes down to the additives. Any 4-cycle engine oil will work for an I/O engine. But I stick with the manufacture's brand for 2-cycle and gear oil. I figure their blend is best suited for their specific applications. And you can bet that will be the first question asked in a warrantee claim.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it (or sliding off it, depending on the situation).

The oil companies say not to use it if the car burns or leaks oil because of it high expense. On engines that are idle for periods of time synthetic oil doesn't coat the internl parts as well, allowing rust to start sooner. Best not to use it in the last tank of the season. Maybe its Pennsoil to avoid. I know that one company is in court for having changed a molecule in their oil and are now calling it synthetic! I have total faith in its ability to reduce wear on the parts but I don't know the changes it causes in the combustion cycle.

Bottom line...
If it is approved by the National Marine Manufacturer's Association (NMMA),usa at least, it is what your engine needs. And it is proper in all respects. The only thing is to try to use the same oil all the time. Things happen, and this can't allways be done, but DO try. Other than that, she'll run fine.
