Yep, there he goes! :D

What do ya mean by plastic minows? like a rapala minow type bait? most of them are classify as jerkbait. As the name implies, you jerk it back to the boat and reel in the slack line. Crankbait is a lure that you just simply cast out and reel in.

Soft plastic minnows are called swimbaits. Hard plastics/balsa are crankbaits or jerkbaits.

OK, I went to Gander Mountain on my lunch break. Whooee, those crankbait lures ain't cheap! At the rate I lose lures I can see this could get expensive

So I picked up a package of those rubbery salted lures (not Senko, a Gander Mtn. brand, which was a lot cheaper). I also picked up a "Bandit" brand 0-1 ft. depth crankbait, and a couple "Storm" brand "Thundersticks" that were 1/2 off in the bargain bin. Are Thundersticks considered crankbaits? They lured me in, hopefully they'll to the same to the fish :D

Yeah, that's what I already had, then.

If you loose a lot of lures you should spend $17 on some berkely fireline. 8 lb test should be fine. The money you save an not loosing lures will make up for the cost of the line. If you really don't want to loose lures then get some 20-30# braided line.

Fire line is synthetic line like the braided stuff except it is not braided. Because it doesn't kink or pinch like mono it is MUCH stronger at the same lb test. I swear by this stuff.

Mike you just keep complaining about your fishing "issues" and I'll do my best to set you straight. I've been through most of these issues before.

I would consider a Thunderstick a jerkbait. Look thru bass pro shop catalog under different category of lures will help you a lot. A Fluke is a soft plastic minnow but it ain't a swimbait. BTW, you can have all of my Bandit Footloose. I got a bunch and don't care much for them.

Complaining...one thing I'm good at! :D
Thanks for the fishing line tip scipper!

I took a look at the Bass Pro Shop website-- the Thundersticks seem to exist in a category of their own there, and the jerkbaits they list look totally different. Man, there's a lot of different types of lures...still got a lot to learn...

I like to think of fishing as going to a party...if the snacks or meal are just laying about on the carpet...maybe, just maybe, you might be desperate enough to try something, but on the other hand if it's presented to you by a luscious hostess on a beautiful platter, you'll probably eat even if 'not' hungry, or at the least, keep your eye on her, which will usually in time make you go ahead and try something anyways...
Funny comparison, I love it. Sounds like you've been to some interesting parties, Kenny! ;)

Re: Which lures for which weather conditions?

Update-- I went out fishing this morning, and conditions couldn't have been different than the thick fog last Sunday. This morning was clear and bright. But I wanted to try the topwater lures I picked up, even though there was already some sun penetration. So I tried out the crankbait lure and got a fair sized smallie right away! Here's a pic with the lure he bit on:

Afte that tried one of the thunderstick lures and got a strike, but he didn't get hooked. When the sun was higher in the sky and it got warmer, I tried one of those Gander Mtn. brand "Senko" knockoffs on a Texas rig, but I had no luck with that. I was happy getting the bass, though. I think I have a new favorite lure ;)

Very happy to hear that you had some good luck. I like those shorter crankbaits. I just like the way they wobble. They work good for trolling also.

Re: Which lures for which weather conditions?

Nice catch Mike, those lures come in 2,173 colors btw{lol}. And just a little info that you may already know.. but since I can't shut-up and I'm here already...the lip{the plastic, some are metal} come in different size lengths and widths, length for the diving capabilities{longer = deeper} and size{shape} for action{wobble} usually, or at least from my experience...I'm not an expert by any means, so some may have a better more thorough explaination.

Looks like Pontiac lake, great little fishin hole fer sure. Great lil pike lake when I fished it last...they ran on the smaller side but plenty of 'em, maybe try the ol standby red & white daredevel, or chartreuse spinnerbait and hang on. ;)

When {& I did say when not if-LOL} I get my boat back together{before spring at the latest..unless I just jinxed myself} maybe we can meet up for some line stretching together sometime, It's been a long while since I fished out that way.

Hey Kenny, no need to wait till you get your boat on the water, my old tub is holding together pretty well, and there's lots of good fishing weather left. If you need a break from the resto one of these weekends, let's go! I'll pm you my contact info.

Yeah, I've heard the fish in Pontiac Lake are all on the smaller side. I guess it's pretty shallow, and has trouble supporting a robust fish population. It's a real pretty lake though, and it's the destination of choice now when I take the family out. The last couple weekends I've gone back to Cass Lake for the fishing. I go out at 8 am when the launch opens and I'm out by noon-- just as the tubers and skiers are launching-- timing works out perfect. I've heard Wolverine Lake is good for walleye but haven't tried fishing it yet.

Wow, quite the offer Mike, thanks, may take you up on it
I've never fished Wolverine either so couldn't offer any localized tips there.

You made the offer, I just took you up on it. No need to thank me, I'm the one who'll be getting the better end of the deal from your fishing knowledge. ;)
