I am going through the planning of rebuilding a 24' SeaRay, hull only. I am looking into used I/O units and talking to some mechanics they suggested Volvo and Bravo drives instead of Mercruiser.

Any suggestion or experience ?

Thanks.

Val

Chevy, Ford, or Dodge, that is the big question. No matter who you ask, you will hear diverse answers. They will praise the one they prefer, and smash the others. From experience, I have known many people well pleased with mercruisers, and from what "THEY" say, I hear often that volvo makes a very solid sterndrive. I have also heard a few horror stories from both. If you can, open, inspect, find a sound clean one, and keep up the maintenance, for it seems that maintenance is the weakest link for whatever kind you may come across. Good Luck, and let us in on what you decide.

Bravo drives are actually made by Mercury, they're just a larger more heavy-duty unit than an Alpha. Alphas are good drives as long as the horsepower isn't too excessive. More people in my area go with Volvos because they offer a 2 year warranty as opposed to Merc's 1 year. But since you're looking for used components that won't really affect your decision. I think with proper upkeep, either make will hold up well. Just buy the best used you can find! :D

Valv, from a cost standpoint, go with mercruiser..[remember, you want used..your gonna be buying parts/service eventually]...as far as what drive, you are on the fence with boat size...want big block performance? Gotta go with a Bravo drive... small block economy?..then the alpha drive will suit you fine....

If the Volvo runs anything like my Saab, get the Volvo.

Good Luck!
