Hey guys,
Just wondering if any of you Keep your boats in places other than marinas/driveways. Due to the size of my driveway I have no room to keep it there and i dont want to be limited to keeping it docked on one lake. I was checking out those public storage places and they charge around $50 / month (outdoor), which is a little too much for me.
I live in Ontario (Mississauga)

Thanks for any input

The only way i could get it into my backyard would be to tip it on its side and lift it, doubt it possible though, even though its a 16 ft aluminum

...I know Mississauga..and there aren't a lot of houses and yards with too much room beyond the family vehicle. Particularly if you are living in a newer subdivision.
Where do you use your boat mostly? Muskokas? Lake Ontario? Peterborough/Hwy 7 area?
I would see if there is a place en-route (Bolton?, Barrie) perhaps a farm area not far off the 400 and put out an ad looking for storage space...and name your price. There are a lot of people with some spare yard room around there who might like a few extra shekels a month.
That way you could pick up your boat 'on the way' to where you typically are using it.
Keep me posted and Good luck.

I'm layed-up for the summer (injury) so mine is collecting dust in my (rental) shop. Since I like to prutz around with various toys, an industrial unit was a perfect rental for me.
I can work on the boat or cars anytime, out of the weather, and not be bothered.

Man is this site ever helpful, thanks for the repsonses guys keep em coming.

If you dont mind me asking how much does that indoor storage cost you per month?

as for where I fish, itll be lake ontario, lake simcoe, other small northern lakes and the naiagara river during the winter, so no real "on the way" solution i can think of

i have 3 and a PWC in the back yard , and 2 more coming.. one in Daytona, 2 PWC's in my sisters garage.

installing a bumper hitch on the front bumper, of you vehicle, makes getting trailers into tight places much easier.

FB123, my rent is $175.00 @month. The unit is 60'x40' w/electric. I live in a very small farm community and there is just not much in the way of commercial buldings available for rent here. I got lucky. I moved here from SoCal and I always had shops there and have shared (sublet) space to boat people.
Take a look in your area at old commercial units. Some may let you share space and amnities for a small fee. Also, check some Farms that are no longer in production, they may have buildings to rent.

Side yard (either one). My Thundercraft is still in the side yard of the original owner waiting on me to find a trailer to haul it off on. I have to juggle boats and 5 vehicles every time I make my son mow the lawn.

Re: Where you guys keep your boats?

We have a Lot of driveway behind the house. It loops around the house to the shop, which is a dual space RV garage in the basement. Makes an alright shop, fairly long, and tall for being a basement. Ain't as good as the custom one we used to have in the country, but it is the best we could do in the city. Plus, an acre and a half of trees, so no one sees the boats. Out back, we store 2 of the cars, the 2 boats, and whatever junk we have (cars to part out - pile of old lumber/steel - Shop tables that no longer get used - cord of firewood that I need to split:( - just a variety of stuff that changes every week) With all that, we still have plenty of turnaround room, and parking space.

I live in the Finger Lakes area. Right now I keep my boat in the side yard. My landlord wants to charge me $35.00/mo to do this. So far I haven't had to pay by threatening to move. rndn, which lake are you on?

Re: Where you guys keep your boats?

here's where yer at man. ya either got the room, or ya don't to put it somewhere on yer property. if ya can't make the turn like me. ya can cut down the tree or cable or whatever, or ya go find some place that it'll fit and pay up. or ya get a smaller boat so it will fit on yer property....hate to be blunt, but that's the same deal i look at. i can't afford a nice commeceral prperty and my driveway don't wind down behind my house....

bill, if ya leave yer boats in the same place long enough, it'll kill the grass. weeds won't even grow.under it......;)

Re: Where you guys keep your boats?

Mine in winter is kept here ... (see first pic)

In summer it's kept here ... (second pic)

Winter storage is $300 CDN a season to store from Sept to May. Owners of the marina said that winterizing and unwinterizing was included in that price.

In summer to store it at the dock, I just needed the permission of my Uncle... lol. He looks after my boat when im not around also. Checks on my fenders to make sure the loops haven't come loose from wake action etc.

(btw if u look closely in the second pic you can see part of my backside doing up a line)

Re: Where you guys keep your boats?

Oh man - Diablo did you ever score on that Muskoka storage rate. Most of the marinas in those parts are charging 30-40 bucks a linear foot for storage and winterization. I considered myself very lucky to get $400 for the winter in a Gravenhurst self storage place, and that was with me doing all the winterization work.

Fishbuilder, you aren't too far from Dundas St. West and Neyagawa. Check out the commercial site on the north west corner. Guy has a bunch of shipping containers lined up he rents for storage. He'd probably let you park the boat out back for less than 50 a month. Joint's a little iffy looking though. Don't know how much security you could expect.

Failing that drop in on some of the farms bordering north Oakville and Mississauga - all along Burnhamthorpe Road west of Hwy 403. Most look decidedly out of commission and are probably just waiting for the developers to make their retirement dreams come true. Someone might give you a good rate.
