Where would you rather fish the 3rd week in October

New England, around the vineyard and other spots by Fairhaven MA. Florida, Gulfside near shore near the Manatee River by Palmetto FL?

I suggest Manatee Florida..... fishing off Longboat pass, then taking your catch to Marivista to have them cook it for you..... or swing by Swardfish in Cortez..... or if needed, we go in the mangroves on kayaks.

Got me thinking this morning about the two styles of fishing in the two trips. When I think of a fishing trip that will leave me relaxed on the flight home it has to be fishing the gulf, I can get after it for a day with my charter guy and then take my kayak thru the mangroves to pink panty reef in terra ceia and look at the bridge in the distance, biggest decision to make there is minnows or shrimp.

Mass will have striped bass that time of year. They are kinds of fun to catch and eat.

There are some giant Albies moving in around the Vineyard right now and the Big Bass will be along soon. Im just waiting for everyone to leave so I can get out there. But on the other side of the coin Scott has a great plan. LBK pass is where I spent all my time as a kid. Loved camping out on Jewfish and fishing all night. Of course Jr Guthries house was the only one there at the time but we did have to watch out for wild pigs coming into camp. Miss those days. Any one know if Jr is still around?

Do they still have the seafood festival in Terra Ceia? I used to helpout a friend there and after filleting 200lbs of grouper one year I had to think real hard if she was really a friend.

My choice would be in the Pacific of the coast of Costa Rica. I just got back from there and few things are as exiting as finding a school of dolphins with yellow fin underneath. I just got back and it is wild. 30 tuna in two hours of muscle ripping fights. It helps if you have a trusted guide with eagle eyes who sees birds from miles away.

I don't know I have never been but I do love grouper.

That is MEA weekend in Minnesota all the kids have a 4 day weekend and flights to Tampa are pretty full. I am not flying with giddy children in coach MSP to TPA.

20 and 30 pounders are not quite schoolies, but yes I agree , these yellow fin tuna are not 100 pounders. Another addition to the fun are the huge schools of Mahi Mahi. usually in the 20 to 30 pound range. I could also mention the sailfish and Marlin.

Son in law and I have been talking about going to Cabo for years.

Still on the bucket list, but pretty hard to ignore a world class tuna, marlin and wahoo fishery only 4 hours from home.

I get it, but considering that a charter taking you to the gulf stream costing roughly $2000 for a day fishing, where as you arrive, you will find that the sharks have learned to connect the boat's engine noise to festive meals that are at the end of your line and soon will be in their bellies is not really what you came for. How about all the charters going out every day to the same area thinning out the fish. I have even seen them sending drones up to find bait schools, which is illegal in some states. Never mind the 20 other charters around once you have found the fish.
Now compare this to being out in a charter boat which is charging only $1000 for a day and only an hour travel passing by migrating whales and being the only boat within ten miles of surface. Usually the captains of the small fishing boats will contact each other once they find the hunting dolphins and you may have another one or two boats within a few hundred yards. In October the 4 and 5 year old Mahi come closer to shore and even on 4 hour trips you can end up with more than your fill of mahi and tuna.
At the end of the day you can go to the beach and enjoy the view of surfers and yoga ladies while sipping a nice drink.
I fly from Rochester NY for less than $500 return ticket to San Jose and then hop on a 20 minute flight in a Cesna to Cobano and another half hour drive to Santa Teresa. which is my base.
So why in the third week of October? In November the tourist season gets going and prices for hotels and car rentals double or triple.

Many many years ago I went out with guy in Keys. He had sheets of plywood on board with buoys on them. He tossed them overboard to sit for an hour or so and act as weed beds floating. When we came back the Mahi were stacked up. I have never seen or heard of this being done before and was blown away.
My buddy caught a beautiful Mahi got it to the side of the boat and a shark came along and left him with just the head.
