Hey guys,

My local marine repair quoted me $63 each for carb kits for my 1986 Mercury 50hp 3 cyl. That seems incredibly high. Is there a better place to order them online? I am also havingttrouble sorting through what I need. Im just trying to do a rebuild as my outboardis running lean.

Thanks.

If you know the part number you can google it. There are lots of places to get carb kits on the web.

Re: Where to get carb kits?

Just went to order the gasket kit, and I'm a little concerned.

Carb serial number is: 1379-9450

Pictured here: Mercury Carburetor 50 HP 1987 1379 9450 | eBay

The kit I ordered is this: MERCURY OUTBOARD CARB KITS 40 - 150 HP INLINE -- MASTERTECH MARINE
#7004.

Is this correct? I could not find a WMA/WME number on the carb which seems to indicate the model of carb, so I'm a bit concerned.

Do I need the fuel pump kit as well? MERCURY OUTBOARD CARB KITS 40 - 150 HP INLINE -- MASTERTECH MARINE

Sorry - just very new to this.

Thanks.

Re: Where to get carb kits?

Have you tried to clean the carb. w/o any carb kit?

If you're careful, most outboard carbs can be cleaned and reassembled if you disassemble them carefully and don't tear the gaskets.

I've done it twice to my Yamaha 115 hp without incident. It only takes an hour to remove, disassemble, clean, reassemble and reinstall the carbs. I do have a service manual for backup if I run into any problem, however.

My concern would be gasket compression. Basically, when you use new gaskets they compress to fill in all the little gaps for a vacuum tight seal. With used gaskets, they are already compressed and may not seal.

It's funny I also called around town looking for carb kits today and I also was quoted some crazy price. I then told them I did not need a complete kit only a gasket kit. They didn't have those. Only one shop had a full kit (with float and needle and mabe some other parts too) but only one. The motor I'm working on has four carbs. Why do they only stock one kit?

These shops also seemed really smug like I was wasting their time. This is why brick and mortar shops are going away like dinosaurs.

OP, buy your parts online. Iboats is a good place along with this forum for good advice. Two thing you don't get at brick and mortar boat shops any more.

Tried iboats?

Why should they try iboats and get the parts cheaper? Oh I see because rookies tell them to go elsewhere. iboats has never let me down and it's the only place I shop for parts. Oh yeah and the competitor sites have such good forums too........

Do you know what carbs are on your motor? Try Mike's

Re: Where to get carb kits?

Iboats is a great place to get parts. Probably 90% of my orders come from Iboats and they come quick. That said, the shipping calculations can make small orders not worth it. A few things I have not gotten from Iboats would have cost $15 more because of shipping. I don't shop at competitors either, just Ebay the part numbers.

Only emergency stuff but yes 95% iboats.

When you order parts from iboats two items that you should inquire about are price matching and shipping options. I have saved a bundle that way ;)
