I just obtained an 85HP Evinrude (I think it's year is somewhere around 1971)from my dad. I can't find the serial number or model number on the outboard (I know it's probably hiding in plain sight) so I can determine exactly what year/model it is.

Second, my dad drug the motor behind the boat for a few miles (forgot to put it up) and wore off a few inches of the skag on the lower unit. The motor still seems to run/shift fine, but I would like to look into a new housing or repairing the unit. How do I do this? Will I need a rebuilt lower end?

Excuse my newby-ness.

The model number should be on the port (left) transom bracket (bkt that bolts eng to boat). It could also be on a core plug (looks like a small freeze out plug) on the top of the powerhead near the port (left) cyl head gasket.

Any reliable propeller repair shop can heli arc a new skeg to that lower unit so that it is restored to its proper condition.
