Re: Where in the US to live?

I'm with LubeDude. Puget Sound Washington. Summers terrific..no humidity, 3 months perfect 80's, with little if any rain, winters average 40 degrees for a few months, but you will have to put up with gray drizzly weather. No violent storms, just marine weather. $300,000 will get you water front, back a few streets, $150,000. Acreage for a song rural. THOUSANDS of miles of shoreline, lakes EVERYWHERE, and 4 national parks, mountains, and the ocean within 4 hours. The bad? Politics and gray weather, but sun only a days ride away.

Have to disagree. How can someone from the east post about the west, and obviously never live there? The question again...
If I were to move back to the US, I'd ideally want somewhere where:

- there is water for boating & swimming & fishing & views
- temperatures that aren't extreme either way
- there are no hurricanes or tornadoes or blizzards or floods to tear us apart
- housing costs at less than Manhattan prices
- possibility of shorefront lots, but near a town with schools, work, shopping, entertainment & culture.

And I'll say it again..Anywhere within 200 miles of Seattle. And also 99% NO BUGS. Half the people here don't even have screen doors. Haven't heard thunder in 2 years. Hydro power dirt cheap. East half, probably Arkansas, but has humidity that will put you on your knees in the summer, otherwise a nice place if you like to fish

Minnesota -- "land of 10,000 lakes" (and a few pot holes). No gators, no snakes that bite, 30 - 40 below zero winters, 80 - 85 degree summers, lots of green, lots of fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing (water/downhill/x-country), and hunting. Basically two seasons -- winter and road construction. Ahhh - the good life!

Don't come to Minnesota, it is just terrible. Anywhere south of Iowa would be good.

Kalama, Washington, about 35 miles north of Portland, Oregon. We Have the Columbia River, Lake Merwin and Yale, Silverlake, wonderful rivers and if you want saltwater, we're 1 hour to the Washington and Oregon coasts. Fresh water Salmon, Sturgeon, Trout, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Kokanee, Perch, Bluegill and a myriad of other freshwater spieces. Did I mention Crab, Clams and Oysters? It's ok to drool.

I'd have to agree with central AR or Middle TN. Awesome scenery, great fishing choices and no freaky weather.

You might have to put up with the occasional exploding meth lab though.

spots

Robby6950,

What part of Puget Sound are you talking about?
I've thought about moving there myself but everything I've looked at is substantially more than 300k for waterfront.
The acreage I found was 10k and acre out in the sticks??? Are you talking about the Tacoma Area? or the far north end? I've looked at the area, but couldn't ever find anything that was "nice" and "reasonably" priced. (reasonably is being defined as 300-400k). 350k for a 40 ft lot with a 60 year old 2 bed 1 bath cottage is what I was finding on my search.

Thanks,

Nav

Another one for Puget sound.....I mean RIGHT NOW, this very minute the water is like glass and if I were not at work, I would pro bably bundle up a tad and go take my boat out for a run....

You get crabbing, shrimping, salmon fishing, water skiing, more water than you can deal with, and as they said, a couple of months of drizzle to deal with.....

If it snows it's for 3 days, ONCE per year, that's about average....

Besides, where else do you see bathtub racing! :D (I had to make that pitch)

http://www.tngbbs.com/bathtubracing/

Well there ya go....and hey, you can even put in at Lake Washington and drive by Bill Gates' house......

Try Anacortes Wa,gateway to the san juan islands..a little cold in the winter, but the summer fishing and cruising more than make up for it.

Re: Where in the US to live?

I'd have to say Maine in the summer and Arizona or Florida in the winter. I saw a few posts saying Missouri is a great place. If you like muddy rivers it is. I live 60 miles south of St. Louis and the nearest lake that you can't throw a rock across is about 4hrs away.
