Hi guys,

Is there a general opinion of where in the US boaters have it best?

If I were to move back to the US, I'd ideally want somewhere where:

- there is water for boating & swimming & fishing & views
- temperatures that aren't extreme either way
- there are no hurricanes or tornadoes or blizzards or floods to tear us apart
- housing costs at less than Manhattan prices
- possibility of shorefront lots, but near a town with schools, work, shopping, entertainment & culture.

What do you think? Do any obvious places come to mind, or will there always be compromise of some sort?

Check out Ventura County. Cities like Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley are some of the safest in the country. The ocean is only 15 mins away and there are 5 lakes within 1-2 hrs.

Ventura city and Oxnard on on the ocean.

Temps ave. range from high 50s in winter to upper 80s in summer.

Mrs. QC's brother lives in Havasu, so we spend a lot of time there. Some call it Havazoo as it can be a pretty crazy place to boat on the weekends. Great party though and mid-week is beautiful. Close to 120 degrees about once a summer though too. ;)

You're in Norway? I'd say Minnesota would be down right balmy.

Seriously, Arkansas, Southern Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Northern Alabama, or Virginia would be my start to look first.

I think you have more or less ruled out the entire US with your request.

I was afraid of that. I am now just waiting for Stillfishing to nominate the Mediterranean island of Malta instead....

Best of luck to all of you who will be hit by Wilma.

why would you want to actually lives in Alaska? I agreed that it's a great place to visit just like New York City but not so great to live in. 24 hours of darkness in the winter time would drive me crazy.

Why would you want to live in Indiana? No salt smell in the air and no boating 6 month out of the year would really suck :D

Re: Where in the US to live?

Hey, Oregon is great, we have any climate you may want, we have desert, we have the coast, we have everything in between. Rivers and lakes everywhere. Living is very cheap compared to that state just south of us. If you can stand the politics its a great place to live. Hey, no sales tax yet either.

If you live on I-5, you can be at the coast in less than two hours, go skiing in about the same. I prefure the coast myself. Lows in the 40s and highs 55-60 in the winter, Lows 55-60 and highs in the 70s-80s in the summer.
