Where does the water come out????

I just bought a 1990 Force 5 HP from a woman whos husband passed away and got a very good deal on it. I took it home and started it in a water barrel and it runs well.

The question.....I know that it has an impeller and water inlet, but I can't see the outlet. I have looked everywhere and don't see an outlet tube (or even a hole) anywhere.

Can someone help me please? The last thing I want to do now is run the motor without knowing if the cooling system is working.

Thank you.

On my 50, there wasn't a tell tale hole but on top of the thermostat housing there was a threaded plug which I took out and put a nipple fitting in place connected to a small hose. However I have no water coming from it because there are othee issues with the cooling system.

Re: Where does the water come out????

There was no tell tail (water outlet) on my 1985 Force 85HP either. The water exits the engine along with the exhaust. You can add a tell tail if you want to, I did. It's quite simple & cheap to do. I wanted a tell tail just for piece of mind & glad I did because when I did add it there was very little pressure. This led me to check the impeller condition. Turns out it was not in the best of shape so that was changed & now it's perfect. You should change the impeller because you don't know the history of that motor. Do a search, or I think it's a "sticky" at the top of this section of the forum. "How to add a tell tail" Hope this helps you out.

Re: Where does the water come out????

Thank you for the help. I have done some research now and it seems common that the water comes out with the exhaust.
I did notice that there is a small hole above the lower unit towards the front of the unit in which water comes out steadily when the muffs are on. I didn't see it before because I used a tank with the motor. I felt the water coming out after running the motor a few minutes and it was getting warm. This is a good sign.

I don't think that there is one near the top because the motor turns 180 since there is no reverse.

I am not sure on a 1990 but on my 1984 it comes out of the back of the motor. It actually loks like a nose wth two nostrals on the upper half of the lower unit. Here is a pic of the area.
