Re: Where do the wires go?

What year model is your engine? My 35 HP Chrysler Mod. = 3555, Ser. =2365 and has been reported as being 1970-73. I'm almost sure the origional owner told me it was a 1970 (in1985) and I feel that's what is on the registration.

I thought I saw a conflict in Clymer but I see we both have mag ignitions w/o alternators. jow

Mine's a 1967 Model 35742 serial 1147.............I';ve never heard it run yet, so I'm curious if it'll be a decent motor.

Re: Where do the wires go?

You have everything under the flywheel. Ign.coils, points, capacitors. You have a magnet in the flywheel that make a magnetfield to induce voltage in the coils.
The two wires that you have are connected to the points. When you short it out to each other you kill the engine. This is simple ign.system on outboards from early 1950. The motor is a nice runing thing. I have had many and it is easy to work with.

Alf/bobber;

What do we call you?

Have you verified that you have power at the solenoid/starter relay, which when closed sends power to the starter? If you have a control box setup , you may try and jiggle the shiftarm a bit to make sure that the lever on the interlock switch is closed to allow starting function. It is there to prevent starting in gear and if it is a bit off, it may be preventing you from starting.

Are you getting power across the circuit breaker, inline between the start relay and the terminal block?

You say you were in the process of re-assembling the engine. what work was done to it? Did you re-wire, replace the ignition switch?

Are you using a remote control?

wickware and Nordin; Sorry, I stepped on you guys, don't want to clutter this up, so I'll leave you to it for now.

Thanks, Nordin! After getting the proper diagram from Carholm, I got it figured out. I do appreciate the help!!

Gerry

Gerry; Alf is fine. LOL.......never been asked that before.

It was the interlock switch, DUH!!! Completely slipped my mind. Turns over perfectly now. No gas hooked up and it's not in a barrel of water yet, so all I could do today is just hit the ignition switch to see if power was going to the starter. And yup, it is. One other issue, though. My understanding of the ignition switch is as such; when you push the key in, it should activate the choke. Then, when you turn the key to start, and let the key "spring" back, the choke should be open. Am I correct? What's happening now is, the choke activates when I turn the key, and it won't open back up when I put the key back to "run". Do I have something wired wrong?

As far as reassembling; I bought a boat, trailer and motor as a package for $100 last fall. I've done a complete restore on the boat. The motor had a blown LU, so I found a 45 with a blown piston but good LU. I threw the LU on the 35, replaced head gasket and all seals and gaskets. So, now I'm almost ready to fire it up.

Re: Where do the wires go?

I purchased the motor on a 15? fiberglass RayCraft in 1985 as a starter. After doing all the fishing I wanted to do that summer, I knew it was A Keeper vs A Starter. I knew it was not enough boat or engine to stay in large bodies of water vs crossing on calm days (clocked at 30-35 with just me headed for Bream, Crappie and channel cat in the trees in East Texas lakes. I h/n had one major issue or problem with the motor since 1985 with very low maintenance. Mainly from only burning 6-12 gallons per summer mainly. I have changed the points/condenser once (initially), cleaned the points since if I noticed bogging or hesitation, changed plugs at least twice and impeller last season (due to curiosity vs no cooling water). It has pull started easy if needed due to running batteries down with crappie lights or trolling motor.

If you think you are having a starter wiring issue, jump the starter solenoid to crank the motor. The choke engaging sounds good but you need power to the starter solenoid also from the switch. That might be your next test to see if you are getting 12V at the starter in the switch?s cranking position. I have replaced my switch once due to not cranking but I could run 12V directly from the battery and start it. I doubt the 1st switch was bad because I used TV tuner spray in the 2nd switch (working the switch) with a problem after 5-6 year and it has started since.

Bottom Line! It has severed me well but I give it a ?Good To Go Check-up? in a barrel at the start of each season vs finding a problem 150 mi from home. I might run to my local City Lake to tune or check for power vs starting and idling. I can power tune in the lake on the trailer vs in the barrel. I hope this helps and send me a pis of your motor and I?ll do the same to see if they are related.. jow or wick!!

PS. No Problems! We Appreciate All The Help. This is too long to preview. LOL!!

Thanks. That's the exact same as my motor.

Do you have pics of how you rigged up your trailer? Mine has rollers, but I want to use boards instead. Thanks.

Re: Where do the wires go?

If you fish much alone which I d/n suggest, you?ll need all the extra help you can get "even with help". The 35 HP will push the boat to the winch with the side guides/rollers and bottom rollers/skids. Then I step out and connect before pulling out. jow

Thanks wick, I think that's exactly what I want to do to my trailer. And, it looks easy to do.
