I guess if they don't make them, butt connectors with a dab of silicone glue in each end should do the job for me.

Adhesive lined heat shrink connectors will do the job just fine and you don't need any silicone glue.

I am new to heat shrink, never used it. How much heat are we talking here?

heat shrink connectors of my choice are from Panduit. I rely on them almost daily.

I doubt there are any electrical connectors with epoxy. Epoxy resins are two-part resins and would not harden unless mixed in the proper ratio.

I avoid silicon sealants on electrical connections. Most silicon compounds like RTV leach acetic acid, which is not good for copper wire.

3M SCOTCHLOK are only for wire of 22- to 26-AWG. By federal regulations all wiring carrying current on a boat must be 16-AWG or larger. There is no place on a boat for 3M-SCOTCHLOK connectors.

I JUst wonder, where would you be using these Scotchlocks on a boat anyway? They are designed to splice two ot three wires together. The vast majority of the connections you will make on a boat will need ring or spade terminals so the wires can be connected to distribution blocks. Only when installing a device with pigtail leads could this type of terminal be used even if it was appropriate and available.

I used come connectors just a couple of weeks ago that I got at napa. They were solder filled heat shrink butt connectors.

You put the wires in and crimp them...then hit it with some heat. The solder melts and fuses the wires together and the heat shrink does it's thing for a perfect waterproof connection.

An electical wholesaler will have them but for a handful I just used napa.

As with the Scotchlocks above, fine for data wires, not for electrical wires.

Respectfully, my opinion differs.

They are not rated for data connections. They are rated for electrical, which (last time I looked) included both the 90vac ring voltage of a phone and the up to 48vdc DC battery of a phone.

They are rated for up to three 16-gauge wires, which makes them conform to marine standards.

They are filled with sealant, which makes them usable in exterior locations.

After supervising hundreds of installations that involved millions of those connectors, the only failures have been the result of improper installation.

The scotchlocks are designed for solid conductors only. The clamping spade will cut conductors from the cable. I'd stick with the crimp on heat shrink type available at boat us for a buck a piece.
